It’s been a long wait for the A Quiet Place sequel. A Quiet Place came out in 2018. A Quiet Place 2 had a big premiere in New York City at the beginning of March, 2020, but the rollout was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is now scheduled for release on September 17, 2021. As we wait for the movie to reach us regular horror fans, I wanted to write up a recap of the first film and explore the information about the sequel that’s floating around so that we can make some guesses about what’s going to happen.
Recap of A Quiet Place (2018)
A Quiet Place was John Krasinski’s directorial debut for a major studio. He wrote the script along with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who had started developing the story together when they were in college in Iowa. They were influenced by the rolling landscape of farms and how quickly pastoral life can switch between feeling idyllic and feeling isolating.
The story follows the Abbott family: patriarch Lee, matriarch Evelyn, and children Regan, Marcus, and Beau. In the near future, civilization has been destroyed by blind alien/monsters who are hypersensitive to sound. The creatures also wear armor that makes them nearly impossible to kill. The Abbott family builds a quiet farm life where they try to survive undetected. The family is aided by their ability to communicate via American Sign Language, as Regan Abbott is deaf.
At the beginning of A Quiet Place, we see a demonstration of the super-predatory skills the alien/monsters possess. Beau Abbott is killed when he accidentally causes a toy to emit loud noises. Because Regan supplied Beau with the toy, a subplot of the movie is her guilt and strained relationship with her father for placing her brother in danger.
One year later, Evelyn Abbott is pregnant and the family prepares for her to give birth and raise the child as silently as possible. She goes into labor while Lee and Marcus are fishing and Regan is visiting the place where Beau was killed. Evelyn drops a picture frame, and a nearby alien/monster follows the sound to the family’s home.
When they arrive home, Lee sends Marcus to set off some fireworks they had prepared in hopes that the loud sounds would distract the alien/monsters from any noise Evelyn or the baby makes. After checking on Evelyn and their makeshift soundproof basement, Lee goes back to find his kids. Regan and Marcus fall into a grain silo and have an encounter with one of the creatures. Regan begins to realize her cochlear implant reacts when they are near.
Lee arrives and sacrifices himself for his children, telling Regan that he has always loved her before he is killed by one of the alien/monsters. Back at the Abbotts’ house, Regan uses a microphone to amplify the sound of her cochlear implant reacting, which temporarily distracts the creature long enough for Evelyn to kill it. Armed with their new knowledge, the family prepares to continue to fight.
What do we know so far about A Quiet Place 2?
Screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods opted not to return to work on the sequel, as they wanted to focus their energy on creating new original work rather than contributing to a franchise. (While we LOVE a horror franchise, we also stan this decision and can’t wait to see what they come up with next.) Paramount Pictures selected one idea that John Krasinski had for a sequel, and he wrote the script based on that. The idea? According to Krasinski, it’s “this small idea, which was to make Millie [Simmonds] the lead of the movie…her character opens the door to all the themes I was dealing with in the first movie.”
Filming took place in many of the same places as the original. The bridge where we first encountered the aliens (when the family’s youngest son, Beau, is killed) was revisited as a filming location. The bridge is actually part of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail in upstate New York. All this means is that it’s likely the plot will be similar to the story of the first film. We’re not getting a movie about space.
Krasinski has also said that this movie will explain how the creatures got here and what happened to civilization prior to the events of A Quiet Place.

What does the A Quiet Place 2 trailer tell us?
The official synopsis from Paramount Pictures says: “Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.”
It sounds like we’re about to meet some bad guys.
The trailer starts with “Day 1,” which seems to be the first day of contact between humans and the alien/monsters. It then shows Evelyn, Regan, and Marcus with the baby venturing out of their farmhouse. Either as they are traveling or on a supply run, Evelyn trips a booby trap, which makes a loud sound and attracts the creatures. As the family runs for their life, they are seemingly captured by Cillian Murphy, who says, “You don’t know, do you? The people that are left are not the kind of people worth saving.”
Anyone who has seen The Walking Dead knows that in a post-apocalyptic scenario, other humans become just as dangerous as whatever caused the apocalypse to begin with. It’s like the “dark forest theory” states: “it is safer for any intelligent species that discovers another intelligent species to annihilate them rather than to risk being annihilated by them.” It seems like this is the story A Quiet Place 2 is going to tell.
Here’s the trailer:
- Because A Quiet Place was originally considered for inclusion as part of the Cloverfield franchise, some fans think we’ll get at least one Cloverfield Easter egg that alludes to this maybe being the same universe.
- One fan wonders if A Quiet Place just showed us the first guard of aliens and the sequel could show the “main aliens” arriving.
- Another fan wonders if the aliens are bioweapons rather than monsters.
- A lesser-known theory says that A Quiet Place is actually a part of the Stranger Things universe.
- Many, many fans are adamant that what they would like from the film is to see Lee Abbott alive and his family paired up with the survivors from nearby Schrute Farms. I don’t think this would work as a good horror movie, but I’m down for a comedic Office revival in whatever absurd form it takes.
Will there be A Quiet Place 3?
In November 2020, Paramount hired writer/director Jeff Nichols to create a spin-off. The project is based on another idea for the A Quiet Place universe John Krasinski had. He will produce the project.
