Weekly Watch Guide — HALLOWEEN XL EDITION
Welcome to the best month of the year!
Hey Creepy Catalogers,
Welcome to the best month of the year! If you’re on our email list, you’ll now be getting the weekly watch guide from Mail Chimp instead of Tinyletter. You don’t have to do anything 👻. If you’re not getting the weekly watch guide, you can sign up here.
October is finally here and we get to look forward to a whole month of spookiness. If you’re like me, horror movies are at the forefront of your mind this month and you want to be sure you get to see your old favs and get in a few new scares. Luckily tons of networks will be airing extra horror content (like Freeform’s 31 Days of Halloween and TCM’s annual classic horror movie marathons). Sign up below to get weekly recs based on what’s streaming across all platforms. I’ll be adding a few extras into XL editions of this watch guide all month.
Here’s the best of what’s streaming for horror this weekend:
Best of Netflix:
Vampires vs. The Bronx — This Netflix original is just appearing on the service today. It stars a trio of young boys as their neighborhood becomes gentrified by vampires. It’s the perfect movie to watch with a horror lightweight who can’t handle too many scares, or as a little appetizer before something really scary.
Also check out:
American Murder: The Family Next Door — If you haven’t seen this Netflix original documentary about Chris and Shannan Watts and their daughters… run, do not walk to your couch. At least, if you are a true crime fan. This doc was R-I-V-E-T-I-N-G but also terrifying. If you watch it, Chris Watts is going to be living rent free in your head for awhile. Know that.
Kristy. An under-appreciated Netflix deep cut about a girl who is stalked while stays on her deserted campus alone over a long holiday break. It leaves Netflix later this month, so this is your last chance to see it for awhile.
Best of Hulu:
The Houses October Built and The Houses October Built 2. These two faux documentaries will kick off your month with some serious scares as they follow a team of friends looking for the scariest underground haunted houses in existence. I found the original to be one of the creepiest movies I’ve seen in a long time.
Also check out:
Happy Deathday — One of the best new horror movies of the 2010s. A new franchise, a new idea. Deathday already has a sequel out with a third movie in the works. Definitely worth a watch if you’ve missed it, or a rewatch if you’re looking for a solid slasher movie.
The Blair Witch Project. Perfect if you’ll be doing any fall hiking. It holds up.
Before I Go To Sleep — A creepy, creepy thriller.
Her Deadly Sugar Daddy — I’m sorry, with a title like this, how could it not be the pick of the week??? This Lifetime movie really has everything you could ask for for the perfect movie night movie — many over-the-top juicy moments to discuss, a young writer trying to make it in the world, and someone with a deadly secret. Oh, and it’s “based on a true story”. Perfect for watching with your friends when you’re more in the mood to socialize and discuss the movie than actually watching it.
Best of Prime:
Scary Stories — A documentary about your favorite childhood nightmare is now streaming free on Amazon Prime.
Also check out:
April Fool’s Day (1986) — A throwback to the golden age of the slasher movie. Feel free to sleep on the sad, sad remakes.
The Taking of Deborah Logan — Elite unhinged levels of scary.
Hereditary — Another movie that I personally guarantee will deliver you at least one good scare.
This week’s Horror Happenings:
— Freeform released their schedule for their annual ‘31 Nights of Halloween’
— Another glitch in the Matrix?
— Here’s a list of all the classic horror movies TCM will be playing commercial free this month.
— Everyone is talking about this scary story Stephen King shared. Apparently it’s super freaky!
— Get in the TRUE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT with this vintage episode of Coast 2 Coast AM with Art Bell and listener ghost stories.
— We have some creepy merch items in our store. It’s limited Halloween gear, so get it before it’s gone.
Stay Spooky!!
