In Blade Runner 2099, Hunter Schafer Plays a Human Hiding Among the Replicants Who Won the War

Lewis Gribben, Hunter Schafer, and Dimitri Abold as Elias, Cora, and Bebeto in Blade Runner 2099

Surviving in Blade Runner 2099 means passing as the species that won. Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who disguises herself as a replicant Blade Runner in a Los Angeles where artificial humans hold power and their police hunt human insurgents.

Set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049, the series takes place after a replicant uprising defeated humanity. Showrunner Silka Luisa describes humans as second-class citizens. Cora takes on her new identity to protect herself and her brother, then finds herself partnered with Olwen, Michelle Yeoh’s replicant detective, who has only days left to live.

That partnership puts Cora within reach of someone who could kill her if her disguise fails. Schafer described an interrogation scene in which she’s strapped to a platform, turned upside down, sprayed with a hose and coated in a substance that heals replicants.

Yeoh’s Olwen gently removes it from her face and body. Yeoh explained the threat: “it’s more scary when someone does that to you, because you know that they can kill you if they find you out.”

Olwen’s own body is failing on a schedule she knows exactly. A clip presented at New York Comic Con showed her nail beds turning blue.

Luisa said the discoloration will spread as death approaches, drawing on Roy Batty’s deteriorating hands in the original Blade Runner. She described the end of a replicant’s life as increasingly volatile and desperate.

The detectives’ investigation also turns toward their own kind. Olwen is searching for Merrick, a missing Blade Runner colleague, and the new trailer raises a larger mystery: 38 replicants have disappeared over the past year. It also introduces a possible cure for replicants, though whether that means escaping their fixed lifespans remains unconfirmed.

Winning the war hasn’t given replicants everything they want. Luisa says they still can’t get pregnant or grow old. A district shown in a preview sells human experiences to machines, while Cora’s survival depends on concealing the humanity they’re trying to acquire.

The series is billed as science fiction, with horror-adjacent elements in its bodily deterioration, interrogation scenes and human beings living under a police force built to pursue them. Luisa, who created Shining Girls, says she wanted to preserve the films’ moral ambiguity and unsettling tone. Ridley Scott executive-produces, and Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green helped develop the detective mystery.

Blade Runner 2099 is an 8-episode, TV-MA limited series. All 8 episodes arrive on Prime Video on November 25, 2026.
