Shawn Burkett, the creative force behind Don’t Fuck in the Woods and several other indie horror films, is working on a new movie, and he needs your help to realize his vision.

The Devil You Know is the title, and it’s something that Shawn Burkett has been thinking about for years. In a press release, Shawn is quoted as saying: “The Devil You Know ties into one of my short films from 2015 ‘The Lamb’. I’ve secretly been living in this world for the past ten years, and I’m beyond excited to bring this to life.” Check out Shawn’s crowdfunding pitch to hear more about what he wants to achieve with the movie:

Looking through the press release and the crowdfunding campaign, the movie is going to be a single-location “cabin in the woods” thriller about a couple terrorized by members of a cult. The tone will be similar to The Autopsy of Jane Doe as Shawn describes in the above video, but also Ready or Not, Don’t Breathe, and Evil Dead Rise as shown on the campaign page.

It all sounds pretty great to me. I tend to love single-location horror movies, and the tone examples give the impression of something suspenseful and violent. The campaign also mentions The Strangers (2008) as a genre similarity, and that’s one of my absolute favorite movies of the 2000s. If The Devil You Know can evoke similar feelings to that movie, then it’s going to be amazing.

A teaser for The Devil You Know. It definitely feels like it’s hinting at the movie’s tone.

So yeah, the potential for The Devil You Know is exciting. One thing that struck me about the video testimonies from cast members Kenzie Phillips and Dale Miller is how excited they both are about the script. They both mention how impressed they were when they read it, and that’s reassuring. The Devil You Know sounds like it’s built primarily on suspense, so a strong story is a necessity. Take a look at Dale’s testimony on the Indiegogo page, and listen to Kenzie’s praise for the script below:

Executive producer P.J. Starks is similarly enthusiastic about the movie in this quote he provided for us: “It’s not like anything I’ve been part of previously. I’ve worked on several sub-genres including slashers, ghosts, and monsters but I’ve never worked on survival cult horror; so I’m very excited to be working with Shawn on the film, which is also a serious turn for him as a filmmaker.”

The Devil You Know stars Kenzie Phillips (Don’t Fuck in the Woods 2) and Daniel Alan Kiely (The Barn Part 2) as Victoria and Andrew, a couple who decide to have a weekend getaway at the exact wrong time. Also in the cast are Dale Miller (Halloween 2018), Jason Crowe (Mr. Buzzkill), Joey Mann (Phantom Fun-World), Justin Beahm (Betsy), and Emily McAnulty (New Fears Eve). P.J. Starks (New Fears Eve, The Barn Part 3) and Chris Gierowski (Don’t Fuck in the Wooods) are the executive producers, Shawn Burkett and Cheyenne Gordon co-wrote the script. Shawn Burkett is also directing.

If you’d like to support The Devil You Know, an Indiegogo Campaign is currently live, with 39 days left as of this writing. The goal is to provide funds not only for The Devil You Know, but also to submit other scripts from Concept Media to film festivals. Check out all the information on the page linked below. “The horrific incident sends shock-waves through the nation, igniting a morbid fascination that leads to the birth of a dangerous cult known as ‘The Flock.'”

“Now, over forty years later, a couple unknowingly rents the same cabin for a weekend getaway, unaware that their visit coincides with the anniversary of the tragic events. Soon, they will realize that the followers of Jacob Allen Shepherd have returned to complete the ritual, setting their sights on the couple as their next intended sacrifice.”
