‘The Fetus’ Starring Lauren LaVera is Nearing Completion, and You Can Help Carry it to Term through Kickstarter

The Fetus looks like it’ll be a fun and gory indie horror treat, and the Kickstarter impresses with great rewards and a completely open process.

You can support The Fetus on Kickstarter right now!

Way back in early 2023 we mentioned that Lauren LaVera—the star of Terrifier 2 and the upcoming Terrifier 3—would be starring in a new horror movie titled The Fetus. Then, earlier this year we saw the movie’s first teaser trailer. So, for a long time we’ve been anxiously awaiting any more information about The Fetus, and we’ve just learned that it’s almost here! The movie is about 90% completed, and the team behind the production has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to get the movie finished.

In the past, we’ve shared a few different crowdfunding campaigns for indie horror movies. And frankly, the Kickstarter for The Fetus is one of the more impressive we’ve seen among the independent horror crowd. Starting with the campaign video posted above, it’s abundantly clear that Joe Lam—the director and co-writer of the movie—is passionate about bringing his movie to life. If you scroll down towards the bottom of the Kickstarter page, you’ll find a daily video diary where Joe describes the processes and reasons behind the campaign, as well as his philosophy regarding giving back to fans and future filmmakers through entertainment and education. It’s inspiring stuff and absolutely worth your time to watch.

Passion is fantastic and goes a long way in building trust and a feeling of community, but if you’re contributing to a crowdfunding campaign for a horror movie, then there are two main things you probably want to know about: the movie, and the rewards. Let’s start with the movie.

The Fetus is about a woman, Alessa (Lauren LaVera), who is pregnant. Alessa is nervous about her pregnancy since her own mother died during childbirth, so her partner Chris (Julian Curtis) takes her to visit her old, blind father to try to learn more about what happened to her mother. However, the fetus growing inside of Alessa is demonic, and it begins attacking people while still in the womb. There’s more to the story posted on the Kickstarter page, but I’ll stop there for anyone who doesn’t want too many spoilers. It appears to get even crazier from there! Even if you don’t want to know more about the story, you should definitely go to the Kickstarter and check out some of the images from the movie. It’s looking like a lot of fun so far.

As for the tone of the movie, Joe Lam describes it as very bloody with interesting monster effects, a creepy story, and a little humor done in a horror-first kind of way. Everything we’ve seen and heard so far makes The Fetus sound like exactly what we want from an indie-horror monster movie.

For the rewards, The Fetus campaign offers more than just what you might expect from a crowdfunding campaign for a movie. In addition to rewards like producer’s credits, props, and costumes for the higher donation levels, there are some really great rewards at the lower levels. Of particular interest is a hardcover photo book about the making of the film (which also comes with a Blu-ray of the movie and more). Also, the next level above the photo book includes a book written by Joe Lam about the process of creating The Fetus from development to distribution. It’s awesome to see an indie filmmaker so willing to share their knowledge about how to navigate the modern film industry.

Just to be clear, this is not a paid advertisement. We’re just excited about the movie, and we want to help get other horror fans excited as well. Crowdfunding is a great way for fans to be part of the process of making indie horror movies. So if you like what you see, consider contributing if you’re able. Or just spread the word if you can. Every bit of exposure helps independent filmmakers.
