Creeptober Preview!

Demons (1985)
We cordially invite you to watch a bunch of movies with us in October! This image is from Demons (1985), which we’ll be discussing on October 23rd.

Tomorrow we’re beginning our second annual Creeptober movie marathon! From October 1st to October 31st, we’re going to be watching and talking about our favorite Halloween-season movies each and every day. Starting tomorrow, the daily digest will be taken over by Creeptober for the month. The “Movie of the Day” section will be our Creeptober selection for the day, which we’ll also post on Facebook where we hope you’ll join us in conversation.

We have a main Creeptober page where you can find the list of every movie we’re planning to cover throughout the month. To make it as easy as possible for you to join us in watching, the main page contains links for where you can stream each film. We’ll update the main page throughout the month if we find any changes in streaming availability. Plus, we’ll be posting links to each Creeptober daily digest post so you can easily catch up on any you might miss.

The movies we’ve selected for the month-long marathon are mostly personal favorites, but we’ll also be watching two brand-new horror movies. On October 5th we’ll be covering V/H/S/Halloween (which streams on Shudder Oct. 3), and on the 31st we’ll take a look at Hell House LLC: Lineage (streaming on Shudder Oct. 30). Other highlights include obvious choices like Halloween (1978) and Scream (1996), but also a few less-obvious selections like Dead Dudes in the House (1989) and American Mary (2012). We’ve tried to include a wide range of subgenres, and almost every decade from the 1930s to the 2020s is represented (the 1940s unfortunately didn’t make the cut this year).

Take a look at the full Creeptober list below, ordered by the date in October on which we’ll be posting about each film:

In the News

Shelby Oaks is in theaters October 24th.
  • Michael Shanks, the director and writer of Together, has lined up his next film, Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel. Shanks will be directing from a script he wrote, and he will also produce. The movie is reported to be a sci-fi thriller about a man trapped inside a hotel room. (Deadline)
  • Canadian production and distribution company Clever Creature will remake three films from Roger Corman’s library: The Terror Within (1989), The Haunting (1990), and Battle Queen 2020 (2001). Birthdays

Dan O’Bannon in Dark Star (1974).

Dan O’Bannon was born on September 30th, 1946. Dan took many roles in front of and behind the camera, but his biggest contribution to cinema was as a writer. His most famous script was for Alien (1979), which he co-wrote with Ronald Shusett. Prior to that he co-wrote Dark Star with John Carpenter, which O’Bannon appeared on-screen in. He also contributed to writing Dead & Buried (1981), Lifeforce (1985), Invaders from Mars (1986), and Total Recall (1990) among other films. His greatest achievement though, in my opinion, was writing and directing The Return of the Living Dead (1985).

Monica Bellucci in The Brothers Grimm (2005).

Also born on this day is award-winning Italian actress Monica Bellucci. She began modeling in her teens, a career which led to her being cast as one of Dracula’s brides in Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula in 1992. Since then she’s gone on to have a successful career in film. Audiences in the United States might recognize Monica best as Persephone in The Matrix films, or as the stitched-up Delores in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Fans of New French Extremity, however, will never forget her as Alex in Gaspar Noe’s Irreversible.

Cassandra Peterson in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988).

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark was released in theaters on September 30th, 1988. The film stars Cassandra Peterson as the titular character Elvira, a character she had already been playing for years. Elvira was created by Cassandra and her friend Robert Redding for Movie Macabre, a TV show that originally aired in Los Angeles beginning in 1981. Elvira’s popularity spread throughout pop-culture, resulting in her being a star independent of the horror show she hosted, and leading to the 1988 film.

Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine in Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010).
Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine in Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010).

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil opened in a limited number of US theaters on September 30th, 2010. The movie flips the script on backwoods slashers by focusing on a bunch of people who assume two locals are violent murderers, but who are actually very nice guys. It’s a fun flick worth checking out if you’ve never seen it. The director, Eli Craig, most recently directed Clown in a Cornfield.
