Shana Bull has a Halloween pick for college women: the nurse disguise Carey Mulligan wears as Cassie in *Promising Young Woman*. Bull shared the look on Threads, pairing a short white nurse dress with the rainbow wig that makes Cassie instantly recognizable.
In the film, Cassie wears the outfit to pose as a stripper at Al Monroe’s bachelor party. Al is tied to the assault of her friend Nina during their medical-school years, and Cassie uses the disguise to get close to him. The scene gives a costume designed to look playful a much darker meaning.
The Halloween connection was part of the design. Hair department head Daniel Curet told *The Hollywood Reporter*, “The whole point was we want people to dress like this for Halloween.” Costume designer Nancy Steiner told *Entertainment Weekly* she started with inexpensive nurse costumes ordered online before tailors made the film’s vinyl version.
The look has lived beyond the film’s 2020 release. A Cassie Halloween guide appeared in 2021, and replica kits still pair the nurse dress with a multicolored wig. Mulligan told *BuzzFeed* she’d “requested to keep the nurse’s costume just for posterity.”
