American Horror Story's Murder House Appeared as a Frat House in a 1999 Buffy Episode

The Halloween party in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s “Fear, Itself” takes place at a frat house whose exterior would later become American Horror Story’s Murder House. The real location is the Rosenheim Mansion at 1120 Westchester Place in Los Angeles.

Buffy’s season 4, episode 4 aired on October 26, 1999. The mansion stands in for the Alpha Delta fraternity house at UC Sunnydale, where the brothers paint Gachnar’s mark and Oz’s spilled blood activates the fear demon.

12 years later, American Horror Story used the mansion for its pilot, introducing the Harmon family and their home haunted by former residents. Murder House premiered on FX on October 5, 2011, making today its 15th anniversary.

The shared location doesn’t establish a canonical connection between the shows. Buffy used the mansion’s exterior; AHS filmed its pilot at the house, then used replica sets for later interiors. AHS also used CGI to remove the property’s chapel from exterior shots.
