Accessibility

Creepy Catalog is built to be read, watched and searched by everyone, whatever you use to get around the web. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA across the site.

Accessible mode

The site looks like late-night security footage on purpose: a scrolling ticker, a clock, flickering lights, glitching photos and a torn-up footer. If you would rather not have any of that, turn on Accessible mode. It stops every animation, clock and hover effect, removes the textures and glows behind the text, and leaves the same pages, stories, photos and links in the same order.

You can turn it on from three places, and it stays on until you turn it off:

  • the Accessible mode button at the very top of every page, which appears when you press Tab right after “Skip to content”;
  • the Accessible mode button in the menu, next to Close;
  • the Accessible mode button at the very bottom of every page, in black on a plain strip under the footer.

If your computer or phone is set to reduce motion, the site starts in Accessible mode on its own. Your choice is kept in your browser; nothing is sent to us.

What works

  • Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus ring, and the menu and photo galleries can be closed with Escape.
  • Pages have one main heading, a sensible heading outline and labelled landmarks for screen readers.
  • Text meets the WCAG contrast minimums, and text can be enlarged to 200% or re-spaced without anything being cut off.
  • Nothing on the site flashes.

What we know is still open

  • Some older articles have photos with thin or missing descriptions. We are adding them as we find them.
  • Inside a photo gallery the description of each photo is not yet read out; the caption is.
  • The advertising and the cookie notice come from our advertising partner, and some of their controls do not yet meet our standard. We have raised them.
  • Trailers and clips embedded from YouTube carry whatever captions their studio provided.

Tell us
