Mike Flanagan’s Carrie takes one of the story’s cruelest moments and hands it back to the bully. In Episode 5, the words that were once used to torment Carrie White become her own weapon — and the moment lands harder because the series has spent four episodes building to it.

Carrie White breaks Chris Hargensen’s nose with telekinesis, then walks past her bleeding bully and says, “Plug it up.”

Those are the words Chris used to humiliate Carrie in the first place. In Episode 1, “First Period,” Chris and the other girls throw pads and tampons at Carrie in the locker room while chanting “Plug it up!” They record the attack, and the footage becomes material for the “Carrie Red” Instagram account. The harassment continues online and at school.

By Episode 5, Sue confronts Chris at lunch and asks her to delete the account and apologize. Chris approaches Carrie with a sarcastic apology, then insults Carrie’s mother, Margaret, saying she’d kill herself if she were married to her.

Emaline has been encouraging Carrie to use her powers and stand up to the people hurting her. This time, Carrie makes Chris’s nose bleed before breaking it, and with Chris gasping on the floor, she throws the locker-room chant back at her.

It’s an intentional use of Carrie’s powers against her tormentor, and her feelings afterward pull her in different directions. Carrie says it “felt amazing,” but she also admits she “lost control,” which frightens her. Emaline encourages her to embrace that power, while Chris vows revenge.
