A Real Witch Served as a Consultant on the Original ‘Practical Magic,’ Then Demanded $250,000 and Her Own Cookbook

A still from the 1998 film Practical Magic

A real witch who served as a consultant on the original “Practical Magic” demanded $250,000 and her own cookbook, then threatened to curse the film when the production said no.

The dispute grew stranger when the consultant left a producer a voicemail in which she spoke in tongues.

Director Griffin Dunne said she told him, “You’re not going to buy me off with a hotel room…I want a percentage of the movie.” The director brought in Warner Bros.’ legal department, who ended up paying her off.

Dunne also paid for an exorcism ceremony to be performed on him to remove the curse.
