In the Stranger Things finale, the epilogue leaves Steve Harrington in a settled 1989 life: little-league baseball coach, sex-ed teacher, dating someone named Kristen. That last detail is where one fan drew the line.
A TikTok creator going by ange.michaelis calls the coaching gig the “last straw” for a theory known as Conformity Gate, arguing Steve never played the sport and that Vecna only ever saw him with a bat, so the whole tidy ending reads as the villain’s illusion starting to slip.

Conformity Gate is the fan theory that the heroes never actually won. Netflix released the finale, “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up,” on December 31, 2025, and by January 1 an X user named Jess and three co-hosts had framed the conformist, everything’s-fine epilogue as Vecna’s victory, with the group trapped in an illusionary mind-prison.
The idea spread across X, Reddit, and TikTok, and fans started hunting for a hidden episode they were sure Netflix was holding back.

On January 7, nothing dropped. So many people refreshed looking for it that it reportedly triggered a Netflix outage.
The theory went quiet, then came back. On November 2, 2026, a clip began circulating that appeared to show Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin, Mike and Lucas on the show, walking a Chicago street in casual 1980s-style clothes.

To believers it looked like a secret shoot. No sixth season or extra episode has been announced by Netflix, the footage remains unverified, and neither actor has commented.
The baseball case has holes. Accounts of Steve’s Hawkins years cover basketball, swim team, and lifeguarding, and never mention a baseball career, so “he never played” is an inference rather than a line from the show.
The bat itself started as the Wheelers’ garage bat that Nancy took and Jonathan studded with nails before Steve used it. In season 4, Steve helps burn Vecna with Molotov cocktails, so the claim that Vecna only ever saw the bat doesn’t hold up either.
The cast keeps swatting it down. Anyone expecting more “missed the concept of what the show is,” Caleb McLaughlin told The Hollywood Reporter, saying his first reaction to Conformity Gate was that it was “dumb” and that it’s “just Mike’s imagination.”
Randy Havens, who plays Scott Clarke, wrote, “Yes it’s the actual finale I’m sorry to all the conspiracy theorists.”
Matt Duffer told Netflix that Steve staying on to teach and coach “felt very organic,” framing the coaching job as a deliberate ending.
