Director and screenwriter Bernard Rose originally wrote Candyman’s mirror chant to require 13 repetitions. After a read-through, he cut it to 5, citing Bloody Mary and Beetlejuice.
Candyman (1992) gave you a very specific reason to watch your mouth: the legend says repeating his name 5 times into a mirror summons him. As Clara puts it, “No one ever got past four.”

Tony Todd plays the hook-handed spirit, whose legend becomes the subject of graduate student Helen Lyle’s research. Played by Virginia Madsen, Helen investigates with her friend and thesis partner Bernie Walsh, played by Kasi Lemmons.
Her own mirror chant initially gets no response. Candyman appears after she discredits his legend.
That gives the legend’s rule a complication: his power depends on people keeping his story alive. He tells Helen, “I am rumor.”
