From Hogwarts to Homicide, Matthew Lewis Steps Into a Chilling New Role in ‘Murder Before Evensong’ Trailer
A body is discovered at the back of the church and as more deaths follow the rector becomes deeply entangled in a string of shocking crimes.

Matthew Lewis, forever remembered as goofy Neville Longbottom, has stepped into the lead role of the upcoming murder mystery series Murder Before Evensong and the newest trailer has just dropped. Set to air on Channel 5 in the UK and Acorn TV in the US, the six-part drama adapts Reverend Richard Coles’s 2022 novel of the same name. Lewis, also known for his work on All Creatures Great and Small, stars as Canon Daniel Clement, the rector of Champton, who finds his parish divided when he proposes to modernize the church.
The rift within the community is only the beginning. Soon, a body is discovered at the back of the church, and as more deaths follow, Daniel becomes deeply entangled in a string of shocking crimes. The trailer teases Lewis’s turn as an unlikely sleuth at the first murder, then drawn further into the mystery as suspicions mount all around him. Helping Daniel in his reluctant investigation is DS Neil Vanloo, played by Happy Valley’s Amit Shah. Yet even with police support, the danger continues to rise. The villagers remain guarded, a sinister letter arrives, and Neil begins to suspect that Daniel himself may have been the killer’s intended target.
Lewis has spoken openly about his excitement in leading the series, saying, “I’m beyond thrilled to be throwing on the old dog collar and diving into the world of Champton so charmingly created by Rev. Richard Coles. I’ve been an admirer of his work for some time and love the characters and stories he’s written. It’s an honor to work with this creative team and have the opportunity to bring the character of Canon Clement to life for fans of the book and new viewers alike.”
Adapted by Midsomer Murders writer Nick Hicks-Beach and directed by David Moore, Murder Before Evensong combines the cozy appeal of British crime drama with a fresh character-driven feeling of uncertainty that we all love.
Murder Before Evensong streams on Acorn TV on September 29.
