Jane Schoenbrun Wanted Camp Miasma’s 4-Minute Slasher Sequence to Feel Like Being 12 at a Sleepover

Minor spoiler, I guess, but there’s an extended sequence of slashing in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Misama. Writer/director Jane Schoenbrun says it’s “by far the most ambitious thing I’ve endeavored to do cinematically to date.” They go on to say:

“Shooting it in the way we did, the way we see it, isn’t supposed to be the way that those [vintage slasher] movies actually looked. It’s more like the way watching them as a kid felt. The unifying idea was putting together a sequence that could be special enough to capture the adrenaline rush you got when you were 12 years old at a sleepover, watching the craziest sh*t you’ve ever seen and being like, ‘Oh my God, that’s thrilling!’”

In the Fangoria interview, Jane Schoenbrun goes on to talk about the meaning behind the slasher-style slayings, but that does feel a bit too spoilery for a post like this. If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting for Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma to expand into a theater new you, and you don’t want ANY actual story spoilers heading into the movie.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is now playing in theaters, and it expanded to a wide release on August 21.
