A story of what happened on the set of Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) has resurfaced, and it centers on a difficult crying scene, a director’s unusual technique, and Keanu Reeves quietly refusing to go along with it.
Winona Ryder was about 20 when the scene was filmed. Her character, Mina, had been discovered drinking Dracula’s blood, and Ryder was struggling to produce the tears the moment required. To help her get there, director Francis Ford Coppola asked cast members to speak to her in character.
In her original 2020 account, Ryder said the technique meant getting her castmates to shout things at her — and that two of them refused. “Literally, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu,” Ryder told The Sunday Times. “Francis was trying to get all of them to yell things that would make me cry. But Keanu wouldn’t, Anthony wouldn’t.” She said the tactic failed and added that she and Coppola were “good now.”
Ryder has spoken warmly about Reeves before. During filming, she wrote that she felt scared and intimidated by Coppola, then added, “thank God for Keanu.” She’s said his presence comforted her on set.
Coppola disputed the idea that he yelled abuse at anyone. “Shouting or abusing people isn’t something I do as a person or as a filmmaker,” he told People. He said Gary Oldman, remaining in character as Dracula, whispered improvised horrors to Ryder while other cast members also spoke in character.
Ryder’s spokesperson then confirmed that account: “Winona and Francis are in agreement and his recollection is correct. He asked the actors in character to say horrible things to Winona as a technique to help her cry for the scene.” Days after her original story spotlighted Reeves and Hopkins refusing to participate, her team had come around to Coppola’s version of events.
Ryder and Reeves remained close after the 1992 film and later appeared together in A Scanner Darkly, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and Destination Wedding. Their Dracula wedding scene used a real Greek Orthodox priest performing the full ceremony, which has fueled their long-running joke that they may actually be married.
