Q: What is a snuff film? what is a snuff video?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a snuff film is “a violent film that shows a real murder.” The verb “snuff” means “to extinguish,” much as one would snuff out the flame in a candle. The most rigorous and commonly accepted definition of a “snuff film,” though, involves a movie featuring a real murder that was produced and distributed for profit. In the early 1970s, rumors started emerging that an entire underground film industry existed to make and distribute snuff films for profit. But the concept is much older—a 1907 short story called “A Good Film” by Polish-French writer Guillaume Apollinaire was about photojournalists who stage and film a murder due to the public’s insatiable hunger for true crime. But although there are several films that depict actual murder, according to Snopes , there has never been a movie that actually fits the technical definition of being filmed and distributed for profit.

Question 1

What is a snuff film? what is a snuff video?

Accepted Answer

Question 2

What snuff films are on Netflix?

Accepted Answer

Although many of the above-listed films are available for viewing on Netflix, these films are all fictionalized accounts. Since there is no evidence of an actual for-profit snuff film ever being made, it's impossible for an actual snuff film to have been aired on Netflix.

Question 3

Do any movies actually have real death scenes in them?

Accepted Answer

Understandably, commercially released movies won't show the actual death of a person. Historically though, there are rare exceptions to that rule. For example, in 1920, pilot and actor Ormer Locklear died along with his copilot Milton Elliot in a crash while performing an airplane stunt for the movie The Skywayman. Footage of the stunt was kept in the film, and it was even used as an advertising tactic. The movie is now considered lost.

Other movies may use stock news footage that contain real dead bodies, though they will often stop short of showing the actual act of killing. Rambo (2008) is an example of this, showing graphic clips of real dead bodies and violence as the movie begins.

Documentaries are another exception to the "no actual death" rule. The 1997 documentary SICK: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist shows performance artist Bob Flanagan in his dying moments, followed by still images of his dead body.

In a related yet much more sensationalistic way, shockumentaries and mondo movies may show real death, though the authenticity of what is shown is often up for debate. Faces of Death (1978) uses news footage of real fatal accidents, but most of the more grisly moments are faked. One notable example of a real and graphic on-screen killing is in the 1966 mondo film Africa Addio (aka Africa: Blood and Guts). In the movie, a prisoner is shot and killed right in front of the camera.

With the advent of social media and technology that enables nearly everyone to make and post videos online, there are several cases of videotaped murders making their way online. Examples include jihadist decapitations, Mexican cartel killings, and livestreamed murders by mass shooters.

Question 4

What is the connection Between the dark web and snuff videos?

Accepted Answer

Although the FBI diligently investigates reports of snuff films, particularly child snuff films, on the Dark Web, there still remains no evidence of a made-for-profit film that features a real-life murder.
