A fake image of Mia Goth has put a spotlight on how easily AI forgeries can spread under the cover of a verified social media account. After the actress filed to divorce Shia LaBeouf, a doctored selfie appeared to show her mocking him — and her team says none of it was real.

The image showed Goth in a “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN” T-shirt, posted October 8 by a blue-checked Instagram fan page two days after she filed to divorce LaBeouf. It read as a jab at him, and People ran a story treating it as hers before taking it down.
Goth’s team says she had nothing to do with it. “Mia has and never will engage with social media,” her rep told Us Weekly on October 9.

On October 13, her team went further, calling the photo a counterfeit AI image and faulting the platform that let it circulate. “We have filed multiple complaints with Instagram to remove the verified fan account which continues to post counterfeit, AI images of Mia Goth,” the statement said. “The fact that this fan account meets Instagram’s criteria to qualify for a ‘blue check’ is disconcerting on a fundamental level. Beyond that, it is incomprehensible that Instagram evidently prioritizes the dissemination of forged and manipulated images over the protection and integrity of a public figure’s likeness.”

Meta said the account was “removed for impersonating a public figure.”
In the October 6 filing, Goth pointed to irreconcilable differences and listed July 28, 2025 as the separation date, requesting primary legal and physical custody of Isabel, the couple’s 4-year-old daughter. LaBeouf hasn’t commented on the filing. Earlier this year he said of their arrangement: “We’re good as is. We’re in a good spot… we’re trying to figure out co-parenting, and we’re good.”
