Michael C. Hall puts Dexter’s original finale and Six Feet Under’s ending at opposite ends of his résumé. Having starred in both, he understands the disappointment surrounding Dexter’s 2013 conclusion.

“Everybody hated the end, understandably,” Hall said. “I was part of the Six Feet Under finale, which everybody recognises as one of the best. And I was like, Great, now I have both sides of the spectrum!”

Hall played Dexter Morgan during the original show’s 2006–2013 run. He’d initially hesitated to take the role, but the premise’s “audacity” won him over. Even then, he hadn’t expected the character to sustain such a long story.
“I didn’t know that the character had the capacity for evolution that he’s proven to have. Anything beyond the pilot getting picked up was gravy,” he said.
His return in Dexter: Resurrection has given him something unusual to draw on: memories he actually shares with his longtime co-stars. Hall singled out scenes with David Zayas and working with James Remar as experiences shaped by their years together.
“To play a character who has 20-year-old memories that are actual is an interesting thing,” he said. “But a day will come when I’m not doing this anymore … I think.”
