Mike Flanagan says the prom scene in his new Carrie series for Prime Video was one of the most difficult sequences of his career. Speaking to Bloody Disgusting about directing it, he said, “It’s one of the most difficult sequences in my career to execute, but it was one of the most exciting and rewarding.”

Mike Flanagan continued, saying that the prom scene in Carrie is “one of those sequences that I’ll be proud of my whole career. I had so much fun doing that.”

The new Carrie series expresses themes and covers story beats that will be familiar to anyone who has even a passing knowledge of the Carrie story. Whether you’re most familiar with Stephen King’s book, or any of the other live-action adaptations, parts of this new version of Carrie will be familiar.

But Mike Flanagan wasn’t interested in doing a retread of the past. His story hits familiar beats in different ways. The lens is different, and the story is updated for the current generation. With eight episodes to work with, Flanagan’s Carrie explores more of the story and expands into places you might not expect.
