A viewer’s sister reportedly watched all of Joker believing the lead role was played by Ty Burrell, Modern Family’s Phil Dunphy, rather than Joaquin Phoenix. I guess I kinda see it? That definitely would have been a different film entirely.
The resemblance gives the mix-up its punch: Burrell’s awkward, upbeat sitcom dad and Phoenix’s isolated aspiring comedian share a face closely enough to confuse at least 1 viewer. Arthur’s story takes him into violence as he becomes the Joker; Phil spent 11 seasons bringing his enthusiasm to family life.
Both actors won major awards for those roles. Phoenix took home the Academy Award for Best Actor for Joker, and Burrell earned 2 Emmys for playing Phil.
