As horror is more popular than ever, Netflix says they want to “trace the roots of the enduring appeal” of horror and thriller movies. They’ll soon give streamers a masterclass in suspense from the Master of Suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. A collection of the director’s greatest hits and some stellar recent horror movies that were inspired by his work will stream on Netflix next month.

Hitchcock’s most famous film, Psycho (1960), is already streaming on Netflix. It will be joined by Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), The Birds (1963), Frenzy (1972) and Family Plot (1976). Netflix promises there will be more Hitchcock films in the catalog, but has only announced these titles so far. Modern horror movies that were inspired by Hitchcock like Jordan Peele’s Us (2019) and Zach Cregger’s Barbarian (2022) will also be included in the collection.

Hitchcock directed over 50 films in his career. He was known as the “Master of Suspense” and inspired the last half-century of horror filmmakers through his ground-breaking directorial style and technique. In particular, many consider the psychological thriller Vertigo to be one of the best movies ever made.

Behind the scenes, he is also remembered for his poor treatment of his female stars, including Tippi Hedren who recalled feeling like she was in a “mental prison” during the “brutal and ugly and relentless” filming of The Birds. She wrote in her memoir that the director sexually assaulted her during production of both The Birds (1963) and Marnie (1964). She says the last words Hitchcock ever spoke to her were: “I’ll ruin your career.”

The Hitchcock Collection will be added to Netflix on June 1. Netflix will also host a 6-week Hitchcock series at the Paris Theater in New York City (which they own) from May 16 to June 29.
