While speaking to Deadline at the premiere of Clayface, Co-CEO of DC Studios said, “We’re working on [Swamp Thing], absolutely. Yeah, the script is being written as we speak.”
On January 31, 2023, James Gunn announced the first batch of movies and shows that the new DC Universe would be working on. Some of those projects (Creature Commandos, Superman, Supergirl, and Lanterns) have since been released whether in their originally intended form or not. We’re still waiting on others, and a few have been shelved, possibly permanently.
So, without much word on the Swamp Thing film Gunn announced, Peter Safran was asked about it while he attended the premiere of Clayface. Safran assured the interviewer that Swamp Thing is on the way, and the script is currently being written. He more or less said that one of the biggest hurdles right now is timing and scheduling.
Last we heard, Swamp Thing will be written and directed by James Mangold (Identity, Logan). It was announced as “a very dark horror story,” and it was reportedly inspired by Alan Moore’s “Saga of the Swamp Thing” which began its comic-book run in 1984.
More horror in superhero shared universes is always welcome. And if Clayface does well, then maybe they’ll push for Swamp Thing to pick up the pace.
