Ron Perlman Says He’d Still Make Hellboy 3 with Guillermo Del Toro at 86. Here’s Why It Never Happened

Ron Perlman is 76 and still campaigning for the Hellboy ending he never got to shoot. In a new Deadline Q&A, the actor said he has no interest in any other version of the character: “I’m not interested in doing any other version of Hellboy other than finishing the trilogy with Guillermo [del Toro]. It would be so epic. Like a Greek epic. Hubris, hamartia, destiny, nature vs. nurture, it would be such an adventure.”

He added that age isn’t the obstacle: “I’m 76 now, and if he comes to me and I’m 86, we’ll still do the motherf*cker.”

Del Toro directed Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) with Perlman as the cigar-chomping demon, Selma Blair as Liz Sherman and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien. The sequel ended with Liz pregnant with twins and Hellboy’s destiny as the Beast of the Apocalypse left unresolved.

That was supposed to be the third film. Perlman has called the planned ending “dramatic, super-violent, biblical in nature, Greek mythology.”

It didn’t happen because the money never showed. Del Toro has said the project needed rights, Mike Mignola’s blessing and roughly $120 to $150 million, with “nobody knocking down our doors to give it to us.” The two films made modest returns and the DVD cushion that helped them recoup later vanished.

Del Toro closed the door himself in February 2017, tweeting that he’d spoken with all parties and “100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it.” He hasn’t publicly reversed that.

Mignola told Forbes in 2024 he couldn’t see del Toro returning and never thought it was realistic given the cost. Jones said in 2026 that “ship may have sailed.”

Asked by Deadline whether he still talks to del Toro about it, Perlman answered, “No comment.” No studio, streamer or rights holder has announced a Perlman and del Toro Hellboy 3, and del Toro has not confirmed any talks.
