Marco Beltrami, who wrote the musical scores for Scream 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7, has shared some candid thoughts about his work on the franchise in a new interview with Deadline published Oct. 7, 2026.
As a decently big fan of Scream 4 (it’s my second favorite of the Wes Craven Screams), this is a little disappointing to hear. But, to each their own.

Marco Beltrami explained a little further in this Deadline interview that Scream 4 was a movie he didn’t really want to do, and he felt like Wes Craven didn’t really want to do it either. He said Dimension “was really forcing” it, and he was basically writing music more for the studio and not specifically for Wes. He reiterated that the whole thing was “uninspired.”
Beltrami also spoke about how he had some contact with Radio Silence concerning Scream 5 and 6, but he never even read a script for those films. It sounds like he wasn’t interested in doing those either.
But, he says the return of Kevin Williamson as writer and directing his first Scream movie with part seven is what brought him back to the franchise. “I knew it’d be back to the world that Wes created, and I think that’s why I was eager to get back in,” Beltrami said.
