Steven Soderbergh approached Matt Reeves about helping complete The Batman Part II, with just the final weeks of principal photography left. DC Studios supports the arrangement, and Reeves says he’ll keep working on the Robert Pattinson sequel while he’s away from the set attending to a family matter.

Production paused in early October when Reeves stepped away. The studio says the 2 filmmakers will collaborate with the cast and crew to preserve Reeves’ vision.

Soderbergh explained his approach: “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.” He also praised Reeves’ work on the 2022 original as “intentional, specific and rigorously coherent.”

The Oscar-winning director’s films include Traffic, Erin Brockovich and Ocean’s Eleven. His recent work includes the horror film Presence and the spy thriller Black Bag.

Pattinson returns as Batman alongside a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright. Reeves is directing and co-writing the sequel after doing both jobs on The Batman, which opened in March 2022.

Announced at CinemaCon in 2022, the sequel was originally scheduled for October 2, 2026, then moved to October 1, 2027. Another delay announced in June pushed its release to February 2028.
