Why Inde Navarrette Made a No-Friends Rule on the Set of ‘Obsession’

Inde Navarrette made a rule for herself walking onto the set of “Obsession”: no friends. She told an audience at a Focus Features screening that it wasn’t about being cold, it was about the work. “I really want to do this justice,” she said, calling the film her first chance to show range.

Her worry was simple. If she got too close to people, she’d be scared to hurt their feelings when she needed to walk off and pull herself together between scenes.

So she kept her bond with Curry Barker, who wrote, directed and edited the movie, strictly professional. When she needed five minutes, she went to him and it stayed professional.

“Now, we’ve grown to be friends,” she said. That friendship came after the shoot.

The approach tracks with how she’s talked about the role elsewhere, calling “Obsession” her only shot to show what she’d never shown before. Barker made it for roughly $750,000, and the horror film has since passed $500 million worldwide.

Navarrette, who plays Nikki Freeman, has since landed the role of Rogue in Marvel’s next X-Men feature.
