The Crypt Keeper has crawled back out of his coffin. Greg Nicotero rebuilt Kevin Yagher’s original 1989 puppet at his KNB EFX shop, and John Kassir has returned to deliver the cackle that defined HBO’s “Tales from the Crypt.” On September 21, AMC named the ghoul the official host of its 30th-anniversary FearFest — the first new Crypt Keeper material in roughly 30 years.
Nicotero kept everything fans remember: the decaying corpse, the missing nose, the icy blue eyes and the rotten grin. But he rebuilt the sculpt and paint for 4K and gave the hands more articulation. The new spots ditch the classic black tux for a copper smoking jacket and, in a sponsor gag, a coral track jacket, while the Keeper DJs turntables in a crypt-bar full of skulls.
“What a great honor and privilege to re-create this iconic character and get a chance to revisit some of his clever quips and puns with John Kassir again reprising his role,” Nicotero said.
Before anyone gets too excited, this is hosting segments, not a revival. A split-rights problem kept the character locked away for decades: the Gaines estate owns the underlying EC Comics IP, while the HBO-era producers own this particular Keeper and can’t make new episodes without the comic rights. That same tangle killed M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 TNT reboot. The 2026 breakthrough only licensed the existing series and new wraparounds to Shudder and AMC.
