Most couples picture a garden, a ballroom, or a beach for their big day. Tori and David Avery pictured a crime scene. For two self-described horror fanatics, the perfect wedding venue wasn’t a matter of flowers and linens — it was a matter of atmosphere, history, and a genuine good scare.
Tori and David Avery held their wedding at the Lizzie Borden house, then rented the entire property so their close friends and family could stay there, too.
The couple love horror, and Tori said they wanted a venue that was “Somewhere spooky, haunted and really packed a wow factor.” As she put it, they are “huge horror nerds and always love a good spook,” so an ordinary venue was never going to cut it.
For the uninitiated, Lizzie Borden was acquitted in the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother, Andrew and Abby Borden, at their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. The case became one of America’s most infamous unsolved crimes, and the house where the killings took place now operates as a bed and breakfast and museum that draws true crime fans and ghost hunters. Interest in the story has surged again thanks to Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, Ryan Murphy’s reimagining of the crime that is currently trending on Netflix.
The moment the idea struck, they knew they had found the one. “That is when we realized the Lizzie Borden house was the must have spot for our wedding,” Tori said. “We quickly got on the phone with them and asked all the needed questions to make sure it would work out for us and with the help of their amazing staff we knew it was the one.”
Looking back, she said, “It was the most amazing time and the fact that we were also allowed to rent the entire house out for our close friends and family to stay at made it all that much better.”
