Sinister’s Bughuul Got His Face from a $500 Flickr Photo Called “Natalie”

Bughuul, the pale-faced monster from the 2012 horror film Sinister

Sinister’s Bughuul got his face from a Flickr image called “Natalie,” a photo director Scott Derrickson has said he bought for $500. The character has a pretty uncanny resemblance to Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson.

Derrickson has explained where the face came from: the Flickr image, selected by co-writer C. Robert Cargill. He also recalled being drawn to black-metal face paint while searching for the character’s look.

Addressing the black-metal resemblance on March 28, 2026, Derrickson described the image as “Concept art found, not commissioned.”

Thomson described his own mask’s evolution in 2008, starting with a latex hockey mask and later a leather version.

Nicholas King played Bughuul in the 2012 film, with the purchased design carried over largely unchanged. Ethan Hawke plays Ellison Oswalt, a true-crime writer whose discovery of home movies showing family murders draws him into Bughuul’s story.
