There’s a proverb in Japan that translates to, “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.” New Group is a new movie that uses that proverb for the basis of a bizarre plot line.
Ai (Anna Yamada) is a high school student who struggles fitting in with her classmates. Yu (Yuzu Aoki) is a transfer student who resists fitting in. They both attend a rather strict school where, one day, students start forming human pyramids in a compulsive way. As the phenomenon spreads, Ai and Yu resist becoming part of the ever-growing group.
New Group is from director and co-writer Yuta Shimotsu, whose previous film Best Wishes to All was also weird and wonderful. Sahara Momoko and Niwa Haruno are also credited as co-writers.
New Group is now streaming on Shudder and AMC+.
