Clue famously had three endings, each pinning the murders on a different guest. A fourth was shot where Tim Curry‘s Wadsworth did all the killings himself, and almost nobody has ever seen it.
Earlier this year, Curry sat down at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library and called the unreleased ending his “favorite.” When an archivist showed him paperwork confirming four endings existed, he said, “There was one ending where I did all the murders, and of course, that was my favorite.” He added that it was scrapped because the studio “thought it was too obvious.”
The 1985 whodunnit shipped with three theatrical endings that named a different culprit each time. The fourth, in which Wadsworth is unmasked as the murderer and caught trying to flee the police, was filmed but never released.
The filmmakers behind 2022’s ‘Who Done It: The Clue Documentary’ want that to change. In an open letter posted August 31, director Jeff Smith asked Paramount to dig the footage out of its archives as a tribute to Curry, who died August 25 at 80. “We know at least part of it was filmed. We’ve seen the production stills,” the letter reads, noting the ending also appears in the film’s novelization and storybook.
Fans had hoped it would surface with the recent 4K release. It didn’t. Smith offered to help search himself: “I can be standing in front of those famous gates waiting for my visitor pass as soon as you say the word.”
