Gabourey Sidibe says she used sea salt and invoked Saint Michael after she felt something from the American Horror Story: Coven set was trying to follow her. She kept a card depicting the archangel with her for about 5 years afterward.
Speaking to People at the New York City premiere of American Horror Story: 13 on Wednesday, Sept. 23, the 43-year-old actress traced the experience back to filming Coven in 2013. “I had to do a spell and it was shaking the table on me. It really put me through it,” she said.
Sidibe believed the disturbance continued beyond that scene. “Something definitely, I think was trying to follow me off set. But I had to stop it with some sea salt and the archangel, Saint Michael,” she said. She explained that Saint Michael is associated with keeping evil away in Catholic tradition.
She previously told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 that she heard “scratching, like something was trying to get in our trailer” during production.
Sidibe has now returned as Queenie for American Horror Story: 13. To prepare, she rewatched Coven and season 8, Apocalypse, so she could reconnect with the character and account for how Queenie had changed. The new season premiered Thursday, Sept. 24, on FX and Hulu.
