Gillian Anderson and Rebecca Hall will star in a thriller described as “a seductive game of deception.”

The film is The Portrait, and it’s based on the novel of the same title by Ilaria Bernardini.

Gillian Anderson will play a writer named Valeria whose secret lover, Martín, suffers a stroke. Desperate to be near him in what are likely his final days, Valeria commissions Martín’s wife, Isla (Rebecca Hall), to paint her portrait. Now infiltrating the life and home of Martín and Isla, Valeria and her lover’s wife develop a complex relationship based on secrets and conflicting emotions, creating “a seductive game of deception” as the official write-up declares.

While the write-up sounds a lot like a drama, Deadline describes the film as a psychological thriller. Sara Colangelo (The Kindergarten Teacher) will write and direct The Portrait. Colangelo said in a statement, “I am beyond excited to be partnering with Gillian and Rebecca. Directorially, the film continues a particular interest I have in themes of moral ambiguity and female transgression– in women’s power and subversiveness.”

No release information is known at this time.
