Bad news for anyone counting down to the Mogwai’s return: Gremlins 3 is going to make you wait. Warner Bros. has pushed the film from November 19, 2027, to October 6, 2028, delaying the franchise’s comeback by nearly a year. The studio confirmed the new date with a 10-second teaser featuring Gizmo and the caption, “10.6.28. Only In Theaters.”
Chris Columbus, who wrote the original Gremlins and directed the first 2 Harry Potter movies, will direct and produce the third installment. Steven Spielberg is returning as executive producer, while Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein are co-writing with Columbus.
On the production side, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment, with Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe producing through 26th Street Pictures. So far, Warner Bros. hasn’t announced any plot or casting details.
The movie will be the franchise’s first new live-action entry since Gremlins 2: The New Batch arrived in 1990. Joe Dante directed the 1984 original, which followed teenager Billy Peltzer after he received a Mogwai named Gizmo and broke the three rules: no bright light, no water, and no feeding after midnight.
The gamble paid off. Gremlins earned more than $212 million worldwide and helped prompt the creation of the PG-13 rating in the U.S. The sequel grossed $41 million and later developed a cult following of its own.
As for why the wait might be worth it, Warner Bros. Pictures executive Jesse Ehrman said, “Few titles are as beloved and iconic as Gremlins, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation.”
