In Mad Monster Party? (1967), Rankin/Bass gives its stop-motion monsters a reason to gather: Dr. Frankenstein has a destructive new weapon to show off and a retirement announcement to make. Boris Karloff voices the doctor, whose choice of successor is his nephew.
The studio behind Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer fills the guest list with Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Bride, the Wolf Man, the Creature, Dr. Jekyll and Hyde, and the Invisible Man. The monsters want the weapon for themselves, with dancing and fights along the way. King Kong even turns up near the end.
Jules Bass directed the film, with a screenplay by Len Korobkin and Mad Magazine creator Harvey Kurtzman. The voice cast also includes Allen Swift, Gale Garnett, and Phyllis Diller. The movie is available to rent or buy on Prime Video, right in time for spooky season.
