Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have made a horror-comedy with their two grown kids, and they cast the whole family as a filmmaking clan whose fake slasher turns real. It’s the couple’s first time directing a feature together.

“Family Movie” follows the Smiths, a family shooting a low-budget horror flick called “Blood Moon,” until a real dead body shows up on set and the killings become real. Bacon plays Jack, a washed-up indie horror director; Sedgwick plays his wife and longtime leading lady Ellen. Their real-life daughter Sosie Bacon and son Travis Bacon round out the on-screen family, with Travis also composing the score.
The idea started during COVID and the 2023 Hollywood strikes, when the family wanted something they could make with few people and little money. They pitched screenwriter Dan Beers on a family that makes horror movies together, and Beers interviewed each of them separately before writing a script built from their real dynamics, though the family says they aren’t playing themselves.

They shot it lean and practical, with real storms, scorpions, and snakes on set. The supporting cast includes Liza Koshy, John Carroll Lynch, Jackie Earle Haley, Andrea Savage, Austin Amelio, and Scoot McNairy.
It premiered at SXSW in March 2026 to positive reactions, with critics calling it campy, bloody, and light on its feet.
“Family Movie” hits theaters April 23, 2027.
