‘Ma 2’ Is Happening — And Octavia Spencer Will Return

“What kind of mother parties with high schoolers?”

Octavia Spencer as the title character in Ma (2019).

Ma (2019) is a psychological thriller that went under the radar when it was released. Critics gave it mixed reviews and some even treated the movie like a joke. However, Ma has slowly developed a cult following, gaining popularity through memes on social media. Then presidential candidate Kamala Harris even teamed up with star Octavia Spencer to spoof Ma in a get out the vote video.

What is Ma about? Octavia Spencer plays Sue Ann Ellington, a vet tech who is asked by a group of high school kids to (illegally) buy them alcohol. She calls the cops on the kids, but they are let off due to small town politics. She then approaches them and offers to let the students drink and party in her basement. The group and their friends begin to regularly hang out at Sue Ann’s house and affectionately call her “Ma”. However, the kids eventually grow tired of Sue Ann inserting herself into their lives. They’re also creeped out when they wake up after partying to mysterious injuries and missing jewelry.

(Spoiler alert: skip this paragraph if you don’t want to know what happens). It turns out that the kids’ parents went to high school with Sue Ann. The parents were involved in a plot to trick Sue Ann into performing oral sex on someone she believed to be her crush, but was actually another boy. The event was witnessed by most of the school and traumatized Sue Ann. An unstable Ma breaks down and enacts revenge against the kids and their parents.

A Ma sequel has just been announced with Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum saying “Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma.” Octavia Spencer has already agreed to return. The project does not yet have a director, so the release date is TBD. We’ll have it on our upcoming horror movies tracker when it is announced.
