Matthew Lillard Never Planned to Audition for ‘Scream’ (1996), But He Beat Out Freddie Prinze Jr. Anyway

Matthew Lillard didn’t even mean to audition for Scream — and then he went completely, unhinged, full-send feral in it anyway.

Scream (1996).

Here’s the wild part: Lillard wasn’t even trying to get cast. He was just tagging along with his girlfriend, a casting assistant working on a different project in the same building, when someone spotted him in the hallway and asked him to audition — for Billy Loomis, no less. He ended up cast as Stu Macher instead, beating out Freddie Prinze Jr. for the role. A literal hallway discovery that became one of horror’s most iconic performances.

And what a performance it is. By the third act, Lillard isn’t just acting scared or unraveling, he’s full-on spitting, drooling, and shrieking his way through some of the most quotable lines in horror movie history: “I’m feeling a little woozy here!” “My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!” “I think I’m dying here, man!” It’s chaotic, it’s unhinged, it’s somehow also genuinely terrifying — and it’s exactly why Stu Macher became one of the most beloved horror villains of all time.

Nearly 30 years later, nobody has ever gone this hard in a villain reveal again.
