‘The Endless’ Follows 2 Brothers Who Return to the Cult They Left and Begin to Question Their Escape

A scene from the film The Endless

Justin and Aaron get a videotape from the commune they walked away from years ago, and one day back is all it takes to make them wonder whether leaving was the mistake.

That’s the engine of “The Endless,” a 2017 science-fiction thriller that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and got a limited US release in April 2018. The brothers have spent years telling themselves the UFO death cult they fled was a trap.

The invitation reopens the question. Aaron talks Justin into going back for a single day, and the longer they stay, the harder it gets to tell whether the strange things around them are divine, dangerous, or their own regret playing tricks on them.

What makes it land is who made it. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead directed, produced, and star, Benson wrote the script, and Moorhead handled the cinematography, with Michael Felker, Benson, and Moorhead editing. Moorhead has said starring themselves was about self-reliance, so nobody could stop them from finishing the film.

It worked on almost no money. The Hollywood Reporter called it “Maximum weirdness on a minimal budget,” and critic Matt Zoller Seitz pointed to it as proof you don’t need a lot of money to make a compelling movie. It sits at 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The dread builds slowly and without clean answers, which is the point. It’s less about monsters than about what you owe the faith, the family, or the life you once left behind, and whether you’d know it if you were wrong to go.
