What is The Yorkie Werewolf About?
In Jenny’s small town, a feud between witches and mobsters has raged on for years. Jenny doesn’t care about the war or her heritage as a witch, but when a Mafia assassin kills her mother, she vows revenge. Now, as a witch and as a diminutive were-yorkie (a condition caused by a botched magical ritual), Jenny joins forces with a mild-mannered vampire to rid her town of The Mafia once and for all.
This goofy horror-comedy was written and directed by Michael DiBiasio-Ornelas. Isabella Jaimie stars as Jenny, with Risa Mei taking over the role when Jenny transforms into the Yorkie Werewolf. Also featured are Jacob Rainer as Chris the vampire, Rebecca De Ornelas as Jenny’s mother Sandra, and Juan Salvati as mob boss Papa Nick.
The Yorkie Werewolf Review
The Yorkie Werewolf is a lot better than you might expect. The trailer makes it look pretty dumb, and the first few minutes of the movie deliver multiple fart jokes, so the outlook isn’t very good from the start. However, once you get over those initial hurdles you’ll discover a charming and witty comedy.
The story is obviously absurd, the characters make little sense, and the plot takes some pointless detours, but none of that really matters. The whole point of The Yorkie Werewolf is for its characters to have some silly conversations, elicit a few laughs from the audience, and roll the credits. The movie does that job very well, and it all starts with the script. Specifically, the dialogue.
Many times throughout the movie, scenes feel like isolated comedy sketches. Characters are placed together in a single location, then they banter back and forth, often in deadpan ways. This leads to some standout comedic moments. Such as the gun-store owner who tries to explain to Jenny and Chris that he doesn’t sell bombs, but he helps them figure out how to kill a bunch of people all at once anyway. Or the patrons of a bar who have some very specific questions about the biology of how a yorkie werewolf came to exist. There might not be a lot of hilarious moments, but thanks to the amusing dialogue there are plenty of smaller chuckles and chortles to be had in The Yorkie Werewolf.
As for the horror side of this horror-comedy, that is mostly delivered through a few scenes of gore. A beheading here, a disemboweling there. There’s not a lot of violence, but when it happens, it gets bloody. Much of the blood is computer generated, so fans of practical effects might be a little disappointed.
In the end though, at only about 73 minutes, The Yorkie Werewolf is a light and easy watch for fans of ridiculous comedies with a little blood (and a little monster).
