Why People Are Suddenly Arguing Over Whether Freddy Krueger Should Be Canceled

The question of whether Freddy Krueger should be canceled picked up online this month after Freddy joined Fortnite’s Fortnitemares event as a character skin.

Some users have suggested that the crossover sent unfamiliar players looking into the films, including the 2010 remake. That explanation remains a theory.

The remake explicitly identifies Freddy as a child sexual predator as well as a child murderer. The original 1980s film left the sexual abuse implied.

On October 23, one social media user criticized the remake for making that element explicit, arguing that the abuse works better as subtext because stating it outright makes the movie harder to enjoy.

That criticism became part of a broader argument about whether people were trying to cancel Freddy. Posts defending him have argued that a fictional villain who kills children in their dreams is supposed to be evil, or questioned the idea of canceling a fictional character at all.
