Strange Harvest

Star Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Released digitally September 9, 2025 | Rent on Amazon
Strange Harvest is a pseudo-documentary that focuses on a series of ritualistic murders committed by a killer known by the alias Mr. Shiny. Narrated predominantly by two detectives who worked on the case, we’re shown found footage, news footage, interviews, and crime-scene photos that craft a disturbing story that gets stranger as the body count rises.

The story in Strange Harvest is interesting, but the presentation feels like it wasn’t quite right for the story being told. If you’re into true-crime documentaries, you might be able to get into this (despite the movie being fictional, of course), but for me the format kept the story at too much of a distance.

Some of the found footage in the later parts of the movie is well done, but just listening to two detectives tell me the story for the majority of the film didn’t work well for me. Their delivery also felt off at times, as did some of the photos which didn’t look realistic at all (some were fine, some were not good). It all added up to an experience that felt rather dull for about three-quarters of the film. This movie just isn’t for me, and I can’t really recommend it despite knowing that parts of it are well constructed, and that the basic premise is solid.
