We Bury the Dead

Star Rating: 3 out of 5
Released in theaters on January 2nd, 2026 | Find Showtimes
We Bury the Dead stars Daisy Ridley as Ava, an American woman who travels to Tasmania in the wake of a military disaster that killed half a million people. Ava volunteers to help with body retrieval, but her real goal is to find her husband who she fears died in the blast. When she arrives, she learns that some of the dead have started to “come back online.” Though the soldiers leading body retrieval say they’re are docile, Ava’s trek across the island state will bring her in close enough contact to the undead test that theory.

We Bury the Dead is set in a unique zombie scenario, and the undead really are the most interesting part of the movie. How they work from a biological standpoint is left mostly to mystery, which makes their reactions to living people more complex than many other zombie films. It’s just too bad that the zombie side of the story isn’t at the forefront. Instead, We Bury the Dead is mostly focused on the drama of Ava’s grief and her search for closure to her marriage.

As a drama, We Bury the Dead is pretty good. The supporting characters are flatly written, but Ava’s emotional journey is well portrayed (up until the final couple of minutes). The focus of the movie does split somewhat as it dips into a few zombie and survival-horror tropes, and that lack of solid direction lessens the overall impact of the story. Still, it’s a decently entertaining movie, and Daisy Ridley is great in it.
