Movie of the Day: Breed of Greed

Released on streaming yesterday, Breed of Greed is a movie that touches on themes you’ve probably seen a good number of times before. It fits into what some people might call “affluent horror,” and it deals with a wealthy family dealing with the horrors their lifestyle has brought upon them.
Breed of Greed takes place mostly in and around the estate of the Wendolyn family. Bruce, the patriarch of the family, dies, and the fortune he made on highly addictive painkillers is split evenly among his widow and children. None of them are happy about that situation, but things get worse when a mysterious presence in the mansion begins killing the family one by one. One of the kids, Henry, senses that something unusual is happening, and he tries to end the family’s curse before it claims them all.

Breed of Greed looks good, is well directed, and is well acted, but it was way too slow for me. The themes of a greedy family being punished for their avarice aren’t terribly uncommon, so maybe it was familiarity that contributed to the way I feel about the movie. I definitely could have used a lot more spookiness though. More open confrontation between family members, specifically between the stepmother Susan and her stepson Henry, would have also helped. As it is, Breed of Greed feels like a lot of setup with little payoff for the first two-thirds of its run time. I did enjoy the final few scenes when the action picks up, but even those are somewhat anticlimactic.
Star Rating: 3 out of 5
Despite wanting the movie to be a bit scarier and a bit deeper in terms of story and character, Breed of Greed isn’t bad. I’d recommend it for fans of movies like Ready or Not and Death of a Unicorn, but keep your expectations within reason. There are supernatural elements in the movie, but the horror is rather tame. Breed of Greed is currently streaming as a digital rental on Amazon Prime Video.

Birthdays

Jenna Ortega was born on September 27th, 2002. Jenna had a breakout year in horror in 2022 when she appeared in Scream, Studio 666, American Carnage, and X all within the same year. Years before that, she was also in Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), so her association with horror has been strong since a young age. Jenna left the Scream franchise after Scream VI (2023), but her association with the genre continues with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), Death of a Unicorn (2025), and the continuing Wednesday series.

Also celebrating a birthday today is Gigi Gustin. Gigi is a scream whose numerous horror roles go back to 2019 with Girls Just Wanna Have Blood. This year alone, Gigi has appeared in Brute 1976, Garden of Eden, The Plastic Men, and Night of Violence. Also be on the lookout for Stiletto which should be coming out in 2026.

C.H.U.D. II: Bud the CHUD was released on VHS on September 27th, 1989. This goofy and very loose sequel to the original C.H.U.D. (1984) features no returning cast or crew members from the earlier film. The movie is about the result of a military experiment to create supersoldiers, but instead creates an undead cannibal. Through a series of wacky circumstances, the C.H.U.D., named Bud, gets loose and terrorizes the town. As far as bad movies go, it’s pretty fun.
