The first Game of Thrones film now has a title and a release date. Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is scheduled to hit theaters June 6, 2029, with Owen Harris — who worked on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — directing from a screenplay by Beau Willimon.
The story is reportedly centered on Aegon I, who founded the Targaryen dynasty by conquering Westeros centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. He hasn’t appeared on screen before, and the role has yet to be cast publicly.
Plot details remain under wraps, however, Aegon’s conquest is well documented by George R.R. Martin.
Aegon launched his invasion from Dragonstone alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys and their three dragons — Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. Landing at the mouth of the Blackwater Rush, he raised a wooden fort that would become King’s Landing and began subduing the Seven Kingdoms one by one: he burned Harrenhal and killed Harren the Black, defeated Argilac Durrandon of the Stormlands (handing the stormlands to his half-brother Orys Baratheon), crushed the combined Reach and Westerlands armies at the Field of Fire, accepted the submission of Torrhen Stark in the North and the boy-lord of the Vale after Visenya flew to the Eyrie, and later brought the Iron Islands to heel. Only Dorne held out. Aegon was crowned King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men at the Starry Sept in Oldtown, founding a dynasty that would rule Westeros for nearly three centuries.
That Targaryen bloodline also ties the movie to HBO’s House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. House of the Dragon has wrapped its third season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is getting a second.
