Obsession, a Horror Movie, Is Going to the Golden Globes as a Comedy

Focus Features has submitted Curry Barker’s horror hit Obsession in the Golden Globes musical or comedy categories, not drama. The Hollywood Reporter says the choice tracks how the film plays: audiences laugh at Inde Navarrette’s wish-gone-wrong version of Nikki, much of which has become meme material, and Globes voters have indicated they see it as a comedy.

The studio is also following a lane that already took Get Out, The Substance, Poor Things, and Bugonia. Co-star Megan Lawless said a TIFF crowd cheered when her character Sarah was killed. She had expected people to cry.

The film, about a One Willow Wish that makes Nikki obsess over her friend Bear (Michael Johnston), has reportedly grossed more than $500 million worldwide on a $750,000 budget.
