From director Casper Kelly (Too Many Cooks), Buddy begins as if we’re watching a kids show featuring a anthropomorphic unicorn and his friends. It’s not long before darkness rises to the surface, and some of the children on the show look for an escape.

There have been a fair amount of “kids stuff turned creepy” over the past few years in movies and other forms of media, but Buddy is easily one of the more interesting examples of that particular horror subgenre. The movie is funny and strange, but it also isn’t afraid to get very dark. I don’t want to say too much about its twists and turns though, because that’s part of the fun.

The cast is also great. Keegan-Michael Key voices Buddy, with Sergey Zhuravsky and Jonathan Yurco playing Buddy in the suit for different scenes. The cast also includes Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Topher Grace, Clint Howard, Tristan Borders, Madison Skyy Polan, Phuong Kubacki, Bennie Taylor, Conner Stumm, Luke Speakman, Tory Jacqui Malone, Patton Oswalt, and Michael Shannon.
Buddy is now available to rent and purchase at PVOD prices on major digital platforms including Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and more. A physical release is scheduled for December.
