The masked ritual in Eyes Wide Shut doubles as a stage in the viewer’s own secret initiation, according to an anonymous theory that maps Bill Harford’s journey onto 33 Masonic degrees.
Its reading of degree 16, Prince of Jerusalem, joins the crimson-and-gold apron to the figure who judges Bill in those colors. The degree’s lessons in compassionate judgment and self-sacrifice supply another proposed link: the masked woman who offers to take his place.
Published online in 2020 as The 33 Degrees of Eyes Wide Shut, the analysis draws on Scottish Rite ceremonies, which combine theatrical performance, costumes, moral lessons and aprons bearing distinct colors and symbols.

Alice’s questioning of Bill during their bedroom argument becomes a proposed test of degree 7, Provost and Judge, and its lesson about judging patiently; the room’s red bedding, white wall and gold framing correspond to an apron with a red border, white fabric and gold key.
Sally’s gold heart necklace supplies the proposed connection to degree 26, Prince of Mercy, and its golden flaming-heart symbol, while the researcher also links her name to the Hebrew word for princess.
The researcher’s casting-based match for degree 27, which teaches care for the infirm, is Emilio D’Alesandro: Kubrick’s driver and assistant plays the newspaper seller Bill encounters.
The author acknowledged that the analysis remained unfinished. These are interpretive connections, with no confirmation from Kubrick that the film was structured around 33 degrees.
