Kate Trefry Told the Duffers Hollywood Was "A Hellhole" in Her Job Interview, and Now She's Running Their Stranger Things Prequel

Kate Trefry’s first paying Hollywood job came from Matt and Ross Duffer. Now she’s co-created Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure with the brothers and will serve as its showrunner, Netflix announced November 6.

The job interview that brought her into Stranger Things happened over Skype while she was visiting Big Lake, Alaska. Recalling it in January 2020, Trefry said she’d expected another difficult industry conversation and spoke bluntly about her frustrations with writing and the business: “Hollywood is a hellhole.”

5 minutes after the call ended, her manager called with an offer. She needed to return to Los Angeles the next day.

Trefry’s been a Stranger Things writer since Season 2 and also wrote the franchise’s stage play, The First Shadow. In the new series announcement, she credited the Duffers with giving her that first paid Hollywood opportunity.

Other Worlds will introduce a new ensemble and mythology in Marion, Nevada, in 1955. That places its story before both Stranger Things and The First Shadow. It’s coming to Netflix in 2028.
